Acquittal in a Case Concerning Attempted Murder Committed by a Group
In 2019, an incident that occurred in the village of Tortiza, Gori District, led the Shida Kartli and Mtskheta–Mtianeti Regional Prosecutor’s Office to charge G.B. and L.A. with attempted murder committed by a group under aggravating circumstances.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offense constituted one of the most serious crimes under Georgian criminal law and exposed the defendants to a potential sentence of 13 to 17 years of imprisonment.

- the confession had been obtained under questionable circumstances;

- as a result, the investigative-stage statement could not be lawfully used as evidence in court.
Furthermore, examination of the case file revealed numerous procedural violations and investigative errors, which significantly weakened the prosecution’s position.
Assessment of the Victim’s Testimony
Through focused and strategic cross-examination, the defense also established that the alleged victim suffered from a psychological impairment that seriously undermined the reliability of their testimony.
This factor became a critical element in the court’s overall evaluation of the evidence.
Court Decision
After a comprehensive review of all evidence and legal arguments, the court concluded that:
the prosecution failed to prove the defendants’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
As a result:
- both defendants were acquitted of all charges;
- an acquittal verdict was issued;
- the defendants were released immediately from the courtroom.
